Day 2

Breakfast

City Tour of Alta: Immerse yourself in local culture in downtown Alta. Visit the Northern Lights Cathedral, a new church that has already become a well known icon and symbol of the town. Photo opportunities await both outside and in, as you tour the church that combines spiritual and natural elements in its design and artwork. Then, head to the ground floor under the church to BorealisAlta, a fun and fascinating exhibition with a Northern Lights theme. Learn about the science behind this phenomenon, and take a little extra time to dance and sing with the aurora in fun interactive stations. You’ll find a wealth of information delivered in a clear and engaging format – by the time you leave you’ll have a solid understanding of the Aurora and the history of its research!

Or  for the more adventurous:

Fat Bike Tour: Join a daytime fatbike trip along the many scenic dog sledding and snowmobile trails in the Alta Valley. This means the best single tracks you can dream of and an unforgettable nature-based experience, no matter what the weather, with a large portion of exercise included for good measure. We stop en route at one of the Alta Valley’s many rustic shelters to light a fire and enjoy snacks and tea/coffee brewed on the fire.

Afternoon at leisure to explore the city.

Sleigh Ride Under the Northern Lights (dinner included): Your hosts will collect you from Alta and bring you out to their farm in the nearby countryside. From there, you will climb on board a sleigh and bundle up with blankets against the crisp, cold air. The sleigh is pulled by a Norwegian Fjord Horse, a breed that is sturdy and patient and has been in use in Norway for centuries. Your ride will take you through the forest and along the Alta River, floating on the sound of the cheerful sleigh bells through spectacular scenery all around. Near the end of the ride, you will arrive at a wilderness shelter and take a break. A late, light dinner will be served around a fire. You will have the chance to take photos of the magical Aurora Borealis if you are lucky!

Overnight 1 x Superior Room, Scandic Alta, BB

Day 3

Breakfast and check out. Leave your bags in the hotel whilst you enjoy your tour.

Snowshoe and Ice Fishing with Arctic Lunch: Come take part in classic Norwegian outdoor activities! “Ut på tur” – getting out and about – is a cornerstone of Norwegian culture. You’ll be picked up from Alta by your outdoor enthusiast hosts, and outfitted with either skis or snowshoes. Then it’s off for a hike through the pine forest in the winter air, looking for animal tracks and breathing in the natural energy of the forest around you. You’ll be joined by your hosts and a cheerful Alaskan husky dog who will pull a pulk with food and equipment. Arriving at the midpoint camp, it’s time to drill a hole in the ice and try your hand at ice fishing. But don’t worry, even if the fish aren’t biting, your hosts will have everything they need to prepare a delightful hot meal over an open fire in a traditional lavvo tent. After lunch, you’ll hike or ski back to the starting point and return to Alta. Now you’re living like the locals!

Mid afternoon private transfer

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel: Experience the Igloo Hotel – the worlds northernmost ice hotel, built from ground every year with different themes. Wander among handcrafted ice sculptures or take an ice drink in the bar. Everything is made from pure snow and ice!

Enjoy a 3-course dinner

Sami Reindeer Sled Tour Under the Northern Sky: Have a close encounter with reindeer and the Sami culture in the evening which is a perfect way to combine the visit with a chance to see the Northern Lights. You will meet your guide at Sorrisniva’s reception desk, dress warmly as needed, and then head out for a peaceful ride through the forest. As your traditional sled creaks through the trees, keep an eye out on the sky above for the Northern Lights. At the midpoint of the tour, you will arrive at a “lavvo” – a traditional Sami tent, and spend some time inside around a fire, warming up with a hot drink and learning about old traditions and the Sami culture from your guide. And on the way back… take the reins and hang on, as the reindeer return along the path back to Sorrisniva.
